"But Jesus went to them and touched them and said, 'Stand up. Don’t be afraid.'" ~Matthew 17:7, NCV
If we're going to be honest, Jesus did some pretty scary things with His disciples. Walking on water, fighting off Romans, transforming into God and chatting with Elijah and Moses... Not to mention all of the miracles He did and all the Pharisees and Sadducees that He ticked off!
Jesus had taken three disciples high up onto the mountain, and prayed. Up there, He started transforming, and Elijah and Moses appeared. Yeah, talk about culture shock! The three disciples saw what for us would be George Washington and Abraham Lincoln appear and start chatting away with their leader. Then, after a moment, they disappeared again.
Your buddy starts glowing and talking to dead people. I'd be frozen to my spot, fainted, or at least freaked. No surprise that the disciples also felt that way - but Jesus, after going back to normal, tells them to get up, and not to be afraid of Him.
Sometimes, God has incredible things happen. Incredibly awesome, incredibly mind-blowing, and you're left sitting there going "This is the God I serve!?" in such a way that you want to crawl in a hole and hide for the rest of your life. When faced with God's awesomeness, our minds generally go into hibernation. We can't comprehend Him. So we shut down. But God wants us to know that He's not done - we've got to get up, trust He's got us, and keep going. There's nothing to be afraid of, if you're on God's side.
We get to choose our team. We also get to choose our attitudes. That's for sure!
